Amazing woman

July 29th, 2010

Some of my friends aren’t on Twitter, so I am posting this here. It was Tweeted by Stephen Fry (@stephenfry) and he said: “What a magnificent woman. I love her completely.”

So do I, this is such a lovely thing to see. Someone making a stand for good cause. I have been so dissappointed with the world lately, and this just made me feel much better. That there are good caring people.

Boycot Target until this is corrected. And I am sure there are things like this happening with other companies as well.

As a reminder to my friends who live or visit in Finland, here is the list of gay friendly companies in Helsinki.

I love mail, here’s why

We are having this “secret santa” type of thing at a crafts forum, Ravelry, and I have gotten some seriously amazing things from my secret friend.

I know my thanks might sound mental to her, because I am so excited about this. So it’s probably good, that I have not figured out who it is yet. So thank you thank you thank you! I love all of it!

The amazing yarn is hand spun and so great. The note said I should use the yarn to make something for myself. I am really happy thinking about what it could be. I am going through some patterns and planning. I love it! And lucky that it’s so long until christmas, so I will actually have time to do something for myself too.

The lace is gorgeous. I have so many things I can use it for. And it’s from her family, so it’s special. The pearls are really lovely. I have done some beading work but never with such nice tools. The flowers are real ones, dried, and I will make many projects with them. The pictures are not great, but I will take scans later and I’ll put any projects I do, online, when I can. And then there was the book about doing crafts with nature’s materials, so many inspiring ideas. “Askartele kaunista kotiin“, lovely book.

The Sonnets by Warwick Collins

July 23rd, 2010

Two of my favorite things, receiving mail and reading books combined, what could be more perfect? A very generous literary blogger and publisher Scott Pack of The Friday Project, (an imprint of HarperCollins) sent me an interesting novel of historical fiction. Here’s my review.

The Sonnets by Warwick Collins

Warwick Collins writes, in his fictional novel “The Sonnets”, about a few years in the life of “The Bard”, William Shakespeare. This imagined account of events works as a setting for the great poets sonnets.

The story takes us to the household of the young Earl of Southampton, who becomes the patron of “Master Shakespeare”, as he calls the poet. The plague has closed the doors of theatres in London, and Shakespeare is in desperate need of a living, so he writes for the Earl and lives as his employee.

While beautiful and seemingly careless, the Earl is also a strong warrior and an intelligent conversationalist in Shakespeare’s mind. Despite of the differences in class and breeding, the two men seem to have a deep respect for each other. Their connection is at least strong enough for the poet to be giving advice to the Earl, who in return teases Shakespeare heartily.

Relationships inside the Earls household and the politics of the time, cause storms that challenge Shakespeare in this oasis he has found during dark times.

Collins uses 32 of Shakespeare’s original sonnets as the “colour” while attempting to “frame the landscape of Shakespeare’s mind”, and creates two imitation sonnets to support the fictional narrative.

William Shakespeare bares bits of his soul in his works, but for better understanding, the reader often wishes for a clearer image of the person behind the masterpieces. This novel offers that desired biographical background to reflect the sonnets against.

In this novel, Collins manages to bring the sonnets to life. He does not make implausible leaps of imagination, but seems content in shedding just enough light on the poets life, to make his work more accessible to a contemporary reader. While in awe of the skill Collins demonstrates in this difficult task, I am not entirely convinced of the necessity of the two imitation sonnets. The amount of sonnets used within the novel, is a little taxing on the subtleties of the story, and adding two more that are not originals by Shakespeare, seems a bit much.

As I was reading this book, I kept imagining it as a movie or a miniseries. The reading of 32 sonnets, might be a brave attempt, even in a BBC quality drama, but one I would love to see. The casting of the Earl of Southampton, whom Shakespeare apparently compares to Adonis, and favourably, should prove interesting.

(Shakespeare’s Sonnets can be read online at “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare” operated by The Tech, MIT).

Look what my friend Laura U. sent me! The beret and the scarf/shawlette are both brilliant and just my color! I knew she was sending me the beret, and was really looking forward to seeing it, but when I found the scarf in the package too, I was over the moon happy. Thank you so much Laura! I will take better pictures when I am around someone who can help me, but for now, here’s a webcam pic of the happy camper that is me. And with Laura’s amazing knitwear there was a lovely note and this really cute drawing, double sided, from her little girl. I am just so moved by this. (Stupid webcam does not show the picture well, but I can assure you, it’s awesome!).

(You need to be signed in for the Ravelry links).

The beret is called Mielikki (Ravelry link) and it’s pattern is by Asarum, who says she will publish it in the near future. Here’s a Ravelry link to pictures Laura took of my beret, the finished project she made as a test knit for Asarum.

The scarf is called Juhannus 2010 and Laura made it for me (Ravelry link). She was worried about the size but it’s actually perfect for me, because I do not get very cold in the winter and I prefer scarfs that are not too heavy, but that cover my neck well. I am learning new ways to tie the scarf. Don’t worry about the way I had it in the picture. I was just super excited and wanted to take a picture fast. :D

(I know my face is really pink, summer is just not my time of year ;) ).

Stand up talk

July 19th, 2010

While listening to another Nerdist podcast, I realized, I need to write down at least some of the names mentioned on the show. I decided to make them in to a post. The guest was Jim Gaffigan (imdb and on Conan show ), whose work I have loved for a long time now. The show seemed like an awesome introduction to stand up,  for people who want to take on the art. It’s interesting to listen to people who know about stand up talking about their experiences and sharing their views.

So, some of the comedians mentioned in the podcast:

Before the storm

July 15th, 2010

It is really hot and humid here in Southern Finland. Shops are ordering more fans, as people are buying them in a fury. I took the picture today, before a storm. It keeps going back and forth from stormy to hot to stormy again. In social media, Finns are battling “too hot” against “finally hot enough”.

The news are a bit gloomy and many of us feel pretty subjucated by the weather.

But gladly some people still have the energy to do things like making awesome discoveries:

I spent a week in Korso, Vantaa, housesitting for my parents. They were at a summer house with Iris, the dog. I took the picture of Iris before they left. She picked that place on her own, I know she looks like she was mad at me for making her stay in the sun. But I  tried to hint that it might be more fun indoors. She just likes this pillow where she can see the yard from the balcony class window. She’s actually taking the heat wave pretty well compared to us humans. The flowers are just two examples of a huge selection, mom really works to make the balcony pretty. So many plants I have never even heard of.
